Knoxville Nationals, Fast Cars & the Power of Fungi

Thousands of racing fans come to town to experience the speed, sound, and excitement of sprint car racing at Knoxville Raceway. For a community our size, it’s pretty incredible to see Knoxville transform into a destination for racing fans from all over the country. When you think about race cars, engines, fuel, exhaust, and all the activity surrounding a major racing event, you probably don’t immediately think about fungi. But maybe you should.

What Do Sprint Cars Have to Do With Mushrooms?

Motor vehicles and other combustion sources can release pollutants into the environment. Scientists have been studying something surprisingly powerful that may help us deal with certain types of environmental contamination:

fungi.

The process is known as mycoremediation, using fungi and their underground network of mycelium to help remove, capture, or break down certain contaminants. The mushroom that we see above ground is actually only one part of the organism. Beneath it can be an enormous network of microscopic threads called mycelium.

Mycelium grows through its environment, releasing enzymes that help fungi break down materials around them. And fungi are really good at breaking things down. That ability is one of the reasons fungi are so important in nature. They help decompose organic material and recycle nutrients back into ecosystems.

Researchers have also discovered that some fungi can interact with pollutants and contaminants in interesting ways.

Fungi vs. Pollution

Scientists have investigated fungi for their potential to help remediate environments contaminated with substances such as petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticides, industrial dyes, and certain heavy metals. Depending on the fungus and the contaminant, fungi may break down some compounds through enzymes or accumulate certain substances from their surrounding environment.

Much of the research into mycoremediation involves contaminated soil, water, and other materials, and scientists are still studying how these biological processes can be used effectively on a larger scale.

Still, it raises a fascinating possibility:

Could fungi become one of the tools we use to help restore polluted environments?

And Yes — Oyster Mushrooms Are Part of the Research

This subject is especially interesting to us because oyster mushrooms belong to the genus Pleurotus, a group of fungi that has been investigated extensively in environmental remediation research. Oyster fungi naturally produce powerful enzymes that help them break down tough plant material such as lignin in wood.

Researchers have investigated whether those same biological abilities could also help degrade certain complex environmental pollutants. So the oyster mushrooms we’re growing here in Knoxville aren’t just delicious. Their fungal relatives are also helping scientists understand what fungi may be capable of doing for our environment.

Pretty cool for something you can sauté in butter.

But There’s Another Side to This Story

The ability of fungi to interact with their surroundings also gives us an important lesson about where our food comes from. Some mushroom species can accumulate substances from the environment in which they grow, including certain heavy metals. That’s one reason you should be thoughtful about where wild mushrooms are harvested.

A mushroom growing next to a busy roadway, industrial property, chemically treated area, or potentially contaminated land isn’t necessarily something you want to bring home for dinner. That doesn’t mean wild mushrooms are bad or that you shouldn’t forage. But responsible foraging isn’t only about knowing what mushroom you’ve found. You should also know where it grew.

Avoid harvesting mushrooms from roadsides, industrial areas, chemically treated properties, or other locations where environmental contamination could be a concern.

One Advantage of Cultivated Mushrooms

We know what they’re growing on, we know where their substrate came from, we control their growing conditions, and we follow the mushroom through its entire journey from mycelium to harvest.

There’s something reassuring about knowing exactly where your food came from, especially when you’re dealing with an organism that’s so incredibly connected to its environment.
